Title: President and Chief Executive Officer
Client: Chicago Youth Centers was founded in 1956 by the merger of three independent boys clubs in different neighborhoods of Chicago. At its inception, the new agency decided to expand programs to include girls. In succeeding years, other independent youth service organizations joined CYC. CYC also owns and operates a 523-acre camping facility in Dowagiac, Michigan, now called Camp Rosenthal.
For CYC’s fiscal year ended June 30, 2003, CYC served nearly 8,000 children and youth, all from inner-city communities where over 60% of families live below the poverty level. Approximately 73% are African-American, 23% Hispanic, and 4% Caucasian, Asian and Native American. CYC’s budget for its current fiscal year is $9.7 million, of which approximately 59% is anticipated to come from government programs and grants, 11% from the United Way, and 13% from individual, corporate and foundation contributions and grants. CYC employs over 150 individuals on a full- or part-time basis, of which approximately 96% are minorities. Nearly 5,000 program volunteers annually contribute more than 90,000 hours of their time to supplement the efforts of CYC’s staff.
Chicago Youth Centers is governed by a board of directors of approximately 50 individuals. Each of the local centers and Camp Rosenthal also has its own board of managers, locally chosen. In addition, a Northern Board and a Metropolitan Board assist in various fund-raising and program activities. The Chair of the corporate board works closely with the President and Chief Executive Officer to further the mission of CYC.
