From
Squalor to Sunshine: Lutheran Child & Family Services Housing
Advocacy Finds a New Home for Agnes and Her Family
Agnes Situation When the
Illinois Department of Children and Family Services referred "Agnes"
to LCFS, she and her four children were living in squalor -- a
poorly heated, 1-bedroom apartment with faulty plumbing and almost
no ventilation.
How Lutheran Child and
Family Services Helped Agnes realized it was no place to raise
a family, but she was afraid she'd be evicted if she complained to
the landlord. Over a period of several months, her LCFS case worker
helped her develop "backbone" while making arrangements for the
family to move to a better home. Agnes also learned basic
housekeeping and home repair skills during this period.
Agnes
Today
Josie and her
children are now located in a clean, safe and sunny house in a nice
neighborhood in Chicago. The children have adjusted well to their
new school, and Agnes has gained the self-confidence to set goals
for herself and to stand up for herself and her children. |
